How to Hire a Magician for your Holiday Party- Part 1
What should clients consider when hiring an entertainer for their event?
First and foremost, always check testimonials on both GigMasters, GigSalad, etc. and the performer’s website. Look for video testimonials as well. If a performer has glowing reviews from past clients, that’s a strong indicator of a quality act.
Next, it’s crucial to match the performer to the specific type of event. Is it an awards banquet, holiday party, conference, or children’s party? Some magicians excel at children’s birthdays, while others shine in corporate settings. Clients should seek out specialists rather than generalists; few performers are truly versatile. Just like you wouldn’t hire a general practitioner for brain surgery, you want an expert for your event. Watching their videos can also give you a better sense of their style.
What questions should clients ask a comedy magician they’re considering booking?
Clients should inquire about the performer’s style. Are they primarily stage performers or do they specialize in close-up magic? How does their act fit into your event plans? It might be worth adjusting your vision if their act sounds exceptional.
Additionally, find out what types of audiences the performer has worked with before. Are those audiences similar to yours? What size are they? Most importantly, pay attention to the questions the performer asks you. If they seem well-versed in the event process, that’s a good sign.
Once a client books you, what details should be discussed before the event?
I always formalize everything in an agreement. It’s important for both parties to have clarity in writing, which prevents misunderstandings. I also like to meet the event planner on the day of the event to finalize setup details and address any last-minute changes.
Oh, and make sure the performer has a GPS-friendly address. You’d be surprised how often people overlook this!
How did you get your start in magic and why do you continue?
I’ve been performing magic since I was a kid. I found a magic kit at the bookstore and I became obsessed with performing magic after that. I would force my family to let me put on shows for them at age 12, and they very kindly supported me! I continue because I love to make people smile and laugh by showing them something out of this world.
What types of gigs do you usually book?
I primarily perform at corporate and association events. During banquets, I often do strolling magic during the cocktail hour as a mystery guest, followed by a funny, clean, PG-13 comedy magic stand-up show after dinner. I also perform at hospitality suites, trade shows, and some private
